World “World TB Day” observed in Leh

Leh, March 24, (Scoop News)- Like other parts of the world “World TB Day” under the theme “Unite to end TB” was also observed today at Leh. Organized by Health Deptt. Leh, a rally of students from Govt. Boys Hr. Sec. School, Girl Hr. Sec. School and TCV Choglamsar was flagged off from Chokhang Vihara by the Chief Executive Councilor, LAHDC Leh, Dr. Sonam Dawa Lonpo. Lead by Chief Medical Officer Leh Dr. Yangchen Dolma and doctors of SNM Hospital, the rally passing through main market Leh later gathered at SNM Hospital Leh where the main function was held where CEC Dr. Dawa was chief guest on the occasion.

Talking about the importance of World TB Day, CEC Dr. Dawa said that this day is aimed at to spread information about the causes, prevention and cure of this disease and students can play a crucial role to educate general masses about this curable disease. Sharing his experiences as an Ex. Doctor and his work at different capacities in the health department, CEC Dr. Dawa said that without the active participation of general public, health department alone can’t eradicate the disease of TB from the society. Stressing on the prevention TB disease at different levels Dr. Dawa said that immunization at early age is very important to reduce the risk of TB disease.

Talking about the GoI’s new national health policy which aimed at to make India free from TB by 2025, CEC Dr. Dawa directed doctors of Leh district to give their best in line with national health policy to achieve the target and assured all-out support from LAHDC Leh to improve the health services in Leh.

Earlier, addressing the programme District Tuberculosis Officer Leh Dr. Tsering Sampel said that World TB Day is observed every year on March 24 to create awareness and support world-wide efforts to eliminate tuberculosis (TB). This annual event commemorates the date in 1882 when Dr. Robert Koch announced his discovery of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacillus that causes TB.

Speaking in tandem, CMO Leh Dr. Yangchen Dolma said that death due to TB alone is touching millions every year in the world and stressed on spreading mass awareness in rural villages through audio and visual programmes. Physician SNM Hospital Leh Dr. Lotus Gyaltson expounding in detail about the Pulmonary ( Lungs) and Extrapulmonary ( Outside the Lungs) tuberculosis revealed that unlike other parts of the world Ladakh has 40 to 50 % Extrapulmonary tuberculosis patients. Giving vote of thanks. Dy. CMO, Leh Dr. Motup said that to mark the day the SNM Hospital Leh will be illuminated with red colour today evening. To eradicate TB from Ladakh, Dr. Motup said that both LAHDC, Leh and Kargil needs to work in close coordination.

In the end, CEC Dr. Dawa distributed prizes among students for best slogan/poster and speech.
