Striking daily wagers of PDD plunge Leh district into darkness,
threaten to intensify agitation if their demands not met at the earliest

Leh (Ladakh), April, (Scoop News)-Scores of Power Development Department (PDD) daily wagers held a sit in demonstration forcing complete power shut down in the entire district in support of their long pending demand for regularization.

They, however, threatened to intensify their agitation in case their demands were not met at the earliest.

The agitating employees who had assembled under the banner of ‘J&K Central Non Gazetted Electrical Employees Union’ alleged that daily wager employees of entire state barring Leh district have been regularized.

“Daily wage employees of 21 districts including neighbouring Kargil district have been regularized so far by the state government except Leh district,” they alleged.

“We have been holding a sit in demonstration near PDD office at Choglamsar for a month now but nobody listened to our woes and grievances or attended to fulfill our demands till date. We were forced to go for a complete 48 hour power shutdown in the district,” they maintained.

The agitating employees asserted that 172 existing daily wagers also include 47 eligible daily wagers who had been left out in 907 cases considered by the authorities in 2013 and these employees under the provision of SRO 381 as per cabinet decision No 151/23/2012 dated 30.8.2012 serving in the department till date.

They contended that some of these agitating employees have been serving in the department for the past over 21 years hoping for the regularization.

A media statement quoting district president of the union, Rinchen Narboo, said that they have been in constant touch with the district and the state administration with the same issue since 2013 but nothing has been done till date.

He affirmed that in view of the shortage of regular staff in the department these daily wagers have been doing bulk of the jobs including meter reading, work of linemen and other related technical works....
