4-day basic business skill training organized for women of Leh district


Leh, May 09, (Scoop News)- Giving a fillip to the handicraft & handloom products of Ladakh under “Project Lak-rtsal, Looms of Ladakh Women Cooperative” in line with Skill Development Programme of GoI, a 4-day basic business skill training to the women self help groups of Leh district begins today at EJM College Leh. Initiated by Deputy Commissioner Leh Prasanna Ramaswamy G, the main purpose for arranging this common platform for all the eight progressive women self help groups from Chushul, Kargyam, Satoo, Merak, Stok, Phyang, Chushot and Kharnakling is to form a one cooperative marketing association of women for Leh district and to make all the women SHGs self sustained under this apex society. Besides basic business skill training through JKEDI, Leh, training about basic financial concept by SBI Leh and basic idea about cooperative system by Cooperative Dept. Leh will also be imparted to the skilled women.
To encourage the trainee women, the Member Parliament Ladakh Thupstan Chhewang and CEC LAHDC Leh Dr. Sonam Dawa Lonpo addressed the training programme today afternoon at EJM College Leh.
Expressing his happiness for initiating this innovative idea, MP Chhewiang highly appreciated the endeavour of officers headed by DC Leh which will go a long way in providing employment opportunities to the youths of Ladakh and felt the need to replicate this idea in entire Ladakh. Reminding about the self sustained society of Ladakh 3 to 4 decades back, Chhewang said that in past every family of Ladakh was used to be a small cottage industry where from hat to shoe was made by themselves. Talking about the importance of cooperative arrangement in taking any kind of business to higher level, Chhewang said that culture of cooperative is in the blood of Ladakhi society.
CEC LAHDC Leh Dr. Sonam Dawa Lonpo speaking on the occasion highly appreciated the tireless endeavour of Deputy Commissioner Leh Prasanna Ramaswamy G and other officers who transform this unique idea into a realistic. Highlighting the invaluable role of women in a society, Dr. Dawa highly applauded the hard work of women in producing quality handloom products and stressed for continuous improvements in the standard of the products. Talking about the influx of tourists in Ladakh which is increasing year after year, Dr. Dawa said that if every single tourist will by a single Ladakhi product, it will be huge boost for the economy of Ladakh.
Assuring every possible help from Council in skill development of women, Dr. Dawa said that council will also help Women SHGs to avail loans from banks and benefits of Cooperative dept. He also mentioned about the weekly market at main Bazar Leh on every Sunday starting from 14th May, 2017 for the local artisans to promote local arts and crafts to attract tourists.
Deputy Commissioner Leh Prasanna Ramaswamy G talking about this initiative said that initially everyone was of the believe that this idea could not work but we took this as a challenge and thanked CEC Dr. Dawa for giving freedom to him in making this creative idea possible. He also thanked everyone for making this project a success including NHPC, PDC and SBI who have promised to support the project in future.
Later, an outlet store for local handicraft and handloom products crafted by women self help groups of Leh district was inaugurated by Member Parliament Ladakh Thupstan Chhewang and CEC LAHDC Leh Dr. Sonam Dawa Lonpo in presence of Deputy Commissioner Leh Prasanna Ramaswamy G and district officers at Tourist Information Centre Leh. The store is facilitated with barcode and billing machine.
The Councilor Phyang Punchok Dorjey and Councilor Chushul Konchok Stanzin were also present on the occasion.
