GYF pledges to revive the tradition of Martial Art from Kashmir known as 'SQAY'

Srinagar, July 17, (Scoop News)- Army has once again come forward to lend a helping hand in maintaining the old and rich traditions of Kashmir, pledging to revive the tradition of Martial Art from Kashmir known as 'SQAY'. Sqay is a South Asian form of sword fighting dating back to ancient periods.


However, declined in the colonial period, the Sqay Martial Arts Association, Shopian has vowed to revive this ancient martial art which is steadily disappearing.

Army in coordination with Global Youth Foundation(GYF), Shopian is organizing a three day coaching cum adventure camp for Dubjan and adjoining areas from 15 to 17 July, with an aim to encourage the budding players. A group of twenty players have joined this camp, which includes, Tajwar Tariq and Susan Zapper who have brought gold and silver medals respectively for the country, in recently conducted 6th Asian Championship. The strength of the camp is expected to increase upto 50. Army is also assisting in administration, conduct of sports and other events in the camp. The activities of camp include trekking to nearby areas, coaching sessions, know your Army module, sports events and joint camp fire.

A joint meeting with Global Youth Foundation and Sqay Martial Arts Association, Shopian is planned after conclusion of the camp, to felicitate participants and discuss the roadmap to encourage and motivate more players and for coordination of future events.
