Reserve seats for women, physically challenged in public transport: Tassaduq Mufti to Transport Department
Srinagar, August 11, (Scoop News)-Coordinator, J&K Government Grievance Cell, Tassaduq Hussain Mufti has asked the Transport Department for effective implementation of the order issued by the Traffic Department in 2012 under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 to reserve eight seats in Public Mini-bus transport for women besides physically challenged people.
Stressing on the need for efficient implementation of the order, Tassaduq Mufti said that generally it is seen that despite this reservation, the woman commuters are forced to remain standing during their travel in public transport. Being the most overcrowded public transport, it gives a chance to certain unscrupulous elements to harass and abuse woman commuters, besides the dignity of woman and respect of the physically challenged people also gets compromised, he added.
Transport department has been asked to ensure that the reserved seats in public transport should be properly and boldly painted so that these seats may be distinguished. Stress was also laid on the regular inspection of buses by traffic police personnel or other officials so as to check and control its violation.
Tassaduq Mufti asked for widely publicizing the toll free numbers notified by the traffic department for this purpose, moreover, regular sensitization should also be held with drivers and conductors so as to make this campaign a success.
