Workshop on Gender Sensitization among youth held at JU

Jammu, August 12, (Scoop News)- National Service Scheme Campus Units in collaboration with the Centre for Women’s Studies, University of Jammu today organized one day workshop on Gender Sensitization among youth for distance learners.
In all, 85 students participated in the workshop.
The workshop was inaugurated by Prof. Jasbir Singh, Chairman, NSS Campus units while Prof. Suman Jamwal Director, Centre for Women’s Studies was the guest of honour.
Prof. Jasbir Singh, in his address, asked volunteers to build self- confidence, say no to peer pressure, thinking positive, being sensitive, condemn disrespect, learn about healthy boundaries and be with positive communication.
In the technical session, Prof. Suman Jamwal raised the issues of Gender Sensitization in context of history of ancient, medieval and modern India. She further dwelt on the issues such as depiction of women /men in various media, literature conflict and resolution, perspective etc.
Prof. Neeru Sharma emphasized on the role of youth in society and how they are seen as valuable participants in changing the society. She also discussed the concept of feminization of poverty.
Dr. Sandhaya Bharadwaj threw light on the issue of gender awareness and sensitization wherein she emphasized that gender bias starts from home and educational institutions. She pointed out the need to shatter orthodox beliefs and biased values to achieve gender equality.
Dr. Vijay Thakur focused on the role of culture and religion in promoting gender bias. She also focused on the role of social media and film industry in promoting discrimination against women.
A special session on craft making was also organized with Ms. Antimaa Manhas as resource person, who gave demonstration how to make crafts at home and put up as decoration pieces . It was stated that the selected students shall be put in training to prepare these artifacts. These can also be sold for earning the livelihood.
The last session was conducted by Dr. Anupama Vohra, who with the help of a skit explained the bias in gender starting from home and then moving on to the society.
Later, certificates of participation were distributed to the participants. Dr. Meghna Dhar, Dr. Savita Nayyer, Dr. Nisha Jamwal and other faculty members also took part in the workshop. Mr. Shiv Dutt, Mr. Rahul Kundal , Mr. Veer Singh, Ms.Nardeep Kour and other senior NSS volunteers also participated in the workshop.
