IAF rescues injured mountaineer from 18,000 feet in Ladakh

Leh, August 16, (Scoop News)- On the request of DC Leh, a critically injured man of 32 year old Parmesh Patil from Pune was rescued by Air Force Leh from Mt. Stok Kangri from an altitude of about 18,000 ft today. He was part of the 23 group mountaineers climbing towards the summit when he supposedly fell and injured himself. He was evacuated safely from a very steep slope with difficulty and admitted to the SNM Hospital, Leh where he was later declared out of danger.

On receiving message from the District Administration about one badly injured mountaineer at the Advance Base Camp of Mt. Stok Kangri. The Siachen Pioneers of Indian Air Force immediately readied two helicopters. Though the temperature was already 25°C and the atmosphere was very turbulent, the helicopters reached the spot and found the patient and group of mountaineers at a very steep slope where while trying to land the helicopter rotors were very close to the upslope and people couldn’t even stand straight to load him into the helicopter. On top of it the mountaineers did not had stretcher and emergency oxygen. The crew then had to return to the base. Later, the helicopter landed at an alternate site.
This time the helicopter landed close to the patient but found the group unable to load him. Immediately the co-pilot Flight Lieutenant Shubham Gautam got out of helicopter helped them with stretcher and ensured safety of the helicopter as well as the mounatineers. After loading him, the helicopter took off for Leh. On landing the patient was given first aid and moved to the SNM Hospital. All the while the lead helicopter led by Group captain S Ramesh was landing and picking up the patient, the No.2 helicopter flown by Wing Commander A Saxena and Squadron Leader JP Parida were continuously guiding the leader thus ensuring his safety. Though the high temperatures, extreme turbulence and steep slopes posed heavy challenges to the operations, the fine professionalism, situational awareness and empathy for the affected had ensured success of the mission saving a precious life on the very Independence Day.
