Inter religious leaders agree to maintain peace and tranquility in region
demand high level inquest in all conversion cases, formation of SIT

Leh(Ladakh), September 16, (Scoop News)-Urging authorities to form a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe into the alleged forcible conversion of a Buddhist girl to Islam and her subsequent marriage to a Muslim boy in Ladakh region, Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA) advocates immediate tabling an Anti Conversion Bill in the state legislature, sources said.

In a bid to maintain peace, tranquility and communal harmony in the district, an inter-religious meeting was held in which representatives of district administration were also present. The inter community leaders insisted on an inquisition of all incidents of conversion till date.

Over 46 conversions of Buddhist girls have been reported during past 15 years, the sources added.

“Everyone supported the move to maintain peace and serenity in the district which was appreciated by the local administration,” sources said. However, the participants demanded an early formation of SIT to hold investigations of all cases of conversions till date.

The sources said religious leaders of all communities met here in the deputy commissioner’s chamber and discussed the current situation that cropped up due to conversion of a 30 year old Angmo (name change) of Saspol village in Leh district followed by tying of nuptial knot with Syed Murtaza Aga (32) who belongs to Drass in Kargil district.

“The participants expressed dismay and anxiety over the conversions,” the sources said, adding “to prevent communal disharmony and allow situation to worsen in the region, all religious conversions should be prohibited forthwith.”

The sources asked why the girls of only one religion (Buddhist community) are affected and converted to other religion particularly Islam and why it is not other way round.

“Why Muslim girls are not permitted to marry Buddhist boys and why a boy is being asked to convert before tying a nuptial knot with Muslim girl,” the sources inquired and argued it to be part of a deep rooted conspiracy of changing demography of the region.
