J&K Tourism Dept. organises Ladakh festival 2017 at historic polo ground

Leh, September 20, (Scoop News)-Ladakh festival 2017 begins today at Leh with an inauguration ceremony which took place at historic polo ground Leh. Chief Guest of the inaugural function Lft. Gen. S.K Upadaya inaugurated the annual festival. Earlier, a spectacular procession was carried out by various cultural troupes, polo team, double humped camel and school students lead by Executive Councilors Dorjey Motup, Tsering Wangdus, Tsering Sandup and Mumtaz Hussain from Karzoo and the procession made their way through Leh in ceremonial costumes, singing and dancing to traditional orchestra tunes ended at the Polo ground.
The Ladakh festival is an annual festival organised by the J&K Tourism Department, in association with local stakeholders, communities and district administration of Leh. The main aim of this festival is to revitalize and bestow a spectacle of Ladakh's deep-rooted culture, traditions and heritage for the world to admire and enjoy. The festival provides a wonderful opportunity for the tourists to experience the culture and lifestyle of the people in Ladakh. In the 4 –day long celebrations, various events and programmes will held such as music concerts, Mask dances, Handicraft and Food Stall exhibition, Archery competition, Polo matches, Ladakhi Folk Ensemble and traditional/contemporary painting exhibition.
Addressing the inaugural function, Lft. Gen. S.K Upadaya said that Ladakh is a unique and wonderful place in India and has everything that one can possibly seek, look and inspire for and the well cultured and wonderful people of Ladakh who have preserved its rich cultural heritage and traditions since time immemorial has made this place more special in attracting thousands of tourists across the world. Applauding the scintillating and enthusiastic performance of artists representing every corner of region, Gen. Upadaya said that such performance in next three days will not only offer us a real window to the rich cultural heritage of Ladakh but will give a holistic experience of witnessing different culture and traditions of Ladakh where we cannot possibly go. Appreciating the affords of organizes in making this festival eye-catching in every respect, Gen. Upadaya hoped that this annual festival will grow strength to strength every year making a landmark in the tourist itinerary of India in general and J&K in particular.
Earlier, Director Tourism J&K Mahmood Ahmad Shah in welcome address said that Ladakh since its opening in 1974 for tourists has seen continuous increase in the influx of tourists, as the arrival of tourist have pickup so as the infrastructure has come up. He said that Tourism department has supported tourist sector through different schemes and programme in Leh, but one scheme which made the difference is the conversion of houses into paying guest houses which not only gives comfortable accommodation to the tourists enjoying Ladakhi tradition and culture very closely but also boost the rural economy in big way. GoI also supports and supplements various tourist facility in Leh, and at present Rs. 32 crore project under

PMDP is going on in Leh including wayside facility along the Leh –Manali and Leh-Nubra roads. Added Shah. He further mentioned about upcoming prestigious projects including Trans Himalayan Culture which is expected to be commissioned next year which will further boost the tourism sector in Leh. Ladakh is a quality destination and our endeavour should be to promote quality tourism in Ladakh and department of tourism and Hill Council Leh is working tirelessly in this direction. Added Shah.
The Additional Deputy Commissioner Leh Moses Kunzang who is also the Chairmen, Organizing Committee of Ladakh Festival gave vote of thanks and thanked everyone including various committees supported by tourist related agencies and artists for making this inaugural programme a grand success and hoped for their continuous support in next three days. He said that besides local artists, this year artists from other parts of India will also participate the festival.
As a part of Ladakh Festival 2017, organized by J&K Cultural Academy Leh an exhibition in Leh Palace was also inaugurated by Executive Councilors of LAHDC Leh today afternoon. The exhibition includes rare collection of J&K Cultural Academy, Srinagar, photo exhibition on K.G 19th Bakula, book exhibition, photo exhibition on Alchi Monastery, Thanka Exhibition of Likir Monastery and Thanka Exhibition of Late Padmashri Tsering Wangdus honouring the legendry Ladakhi Thanka Artists.
