Boring of Rohtang pass near completion, few metres of tunneling left
to reduce both distance and travelling time between Leh and Manali

Leh(Ladakh), October 11, (Scoop News)-With barely few metres of drilling left to complete the two way boring of about nine kilometer long tunnel near Rohtang Pass in Himachal Pradesh, the decades old peoples dream of Ladakh region will soon be fulfilled..

The tunnel is likely to shorten the distance from Leh to Manali by over 50 kns and will also reduce the travelling time between the two points by almost one and half hour. The road to tunnel will change the course from existing Leh- Manli highway near Koksar and will join it again at Palchan on the other side of the tube.

Both portals of the tunnel, in Lahaul and Kullu districts, are in right axis and the two sides are expected to meet shortly at the designated point.

According to informed sources, the Union Defence Minister, Ms Nirmala Sitharamn, might also visit the place and personally witness the final handshake between two opposite teams of technocrats on October 24.

The project is of huge importance for Indian Army as it will enable them to provide uninterrupted supplies in future to their forward posts facing China and Pakistan in the region.

The Central Government also intends to build three more tunnels on 484 km long Leh- Manali highway near Baralacha, Taglanga La and Lacholung La. The passes remain snowbound during winter months
