Holding of Ice hockey tournament will also help promote winter tourism in Ladakh region
inclusion in Guinness World record to be declared within six weeks period




Chibra Kargyam (Ladakh), February 10, (Scoop News)-At an elevation of over 13,000 feet (4, 371 M) above the sea level (ASL) and the temperature below 30*C in Ladakh egion, the organizers, in a bid to find a place in the Guinness Book of World Records, held an Ice Hockey tournament here February 5 and 7.

“We organized this tournament with an objective to set a Guinness World record. The mega event was held at an elevation of 4,371 M ASL. The altitude has been certified by the Geological Survey of India (GSI)”, P Wangchuk, president of Ladakh Winter Sports Club, told media persons.

A formal announcement of its inclusion in the record book is expected to be made within six weeks period, sources said.

He said advice from international experts and professionals was sought in preparing the rink in accordance with International standards and size. “Obviously, it was a tough challenge to organize the tournament in a geographically and climatically inhospitable terrain,” Wangchuk added.

About half a dozen teams, including five international teams with each having 20 members, participated in a tournament. The tournament was jointly organized by Ladakh Winter Sports Club (LWSC), Lalok Winter Sports Association (LWSA) and Hockey Foundation USA.

The participating teams included Hockey Foundation USA, Rainstad from Europe, Tatra Eagles from Slovakia, Gerinomo from Germany and Rainer All Starts from Europe and the host Team Ladakh. Interestingly, the warm up / opening match was played between Team Ladakh and Hockey Foundation USA, which was won by the latter, Hockey Foundation USA.

Expressing his gratitude to all those who made this mega event a success, a member of LWSC, said three players from USA and Canada donated all sideboards. Army had airlifted rink boards from Srinagar.

“Our children and youth will get inspired by holding such tournaments regularly at different places in the region,” said Tsering Angchuk, a senior retired state official.

He said Lalok in Changthang area is emerging as a popular place for holding ice hockey tournaments as winter sets in there from mid October onwards. Taking full advantage of frozen water bodies and ponds for practicing ice hockey, speed skating and figure skating, the local people have developed special interest in the sports besides building of rinks in every village of the area.

Angchuk said the villagers offer voluntary services in building basic infrastructure necessary for promoting the sport in the remote areas of the region.

Holding of such tournaments and involving foreign teams frequently would also help in promoting winter tourism in Ladakh region, he added. ...
