“We organized this tournament with an objective to set a Guinness World record. The mega event was held at an elevation of 4,371 M ASL. The altitude has been certified by the Geological Survey of India (GSI)”, P Wangchuk, president of Ladakh Winter Sports Club, told media persons.

The participating teams included Hockey Foundation USA, Rainstad from Europe, Tatra Eagles from Slovakia, Gerinomo from Germany and Rainer All Starts from Europe and the host Team Ladakh. Interestingly, the warm up / opening match was played between Team Ladakh and Hockey Foundation USA, which was won by the latter, Hockey Foundation USA.

Expressing his gratitude to all those who made this mega event a success, a member of LWSC, said three players from USA and Canada donated all sideboards. Army had airlifted rink boards from Srinagar.

“Our children and youth will get inspired by holding such tournaments regularly at different places in the region,” said Tsering Angchuk, a senior retired state official.

He said Lalok in Changthang area is emerging as a popular place for holding ice hockey tournaments as winter sets in there from mid October onwards. Taking full advantage of frozen water bodies and ponds for practicing ice hockey, speed skating and figure skating, the local people have developed special interest in the sports besides building of rinks in every village of the area.

Angchuk said the villagers offer voluntary services in building basic infrastructure necessary for promoting the sport in the remote areas of the region.

Holding of such tournaments and involving foreign teams frequently would also help in promoting winter tourism in Ladakh region, he added. ...
