| Military Hospital holds two day CME on Snake Bite Management- Changes in Field Area | | 100 delegates participate |
Jammu, June 10, (Scoop News)-A Continuing Medical Education (CME) on “Snake Bite Management – Changes in Field Area was conducted at Military Hospital Jammu on Sa e CME covered all the relevant topics extensively. The programme schedule was made keeping in view the difficulties faced in management of such cases at a peripheral set up so as to give maximum benefit to the treating Medical Officers.
The CME was inaugurated by Lt Gen Bipin Puri, DGAFMS, Sr Col Comdt and was graced by Lt Gen Saranjeet Singh, GOC, White Knight Corps alongwith many other important dignitaries and high ranked officers of White Knight Corps and Government Medical College, Jammu.
The welcome address was given by Lt Gen Saranjeet Singh, GOC, White Knight Corps who highlighted the importance of such event and hoped that the CME would help all the young Medical Officers in future. The DGAFMS in his speech exhorted the delegates of the CME and asked for their full participation with enthusiasm so as to get maximum from the event. He also thanked the organizers for holding a very pertinent but neglected emergency in this country especially in Jammu region.
Snake bite is a neglected environmental and occupational hazard in our country specially for Armed Forces personnel deployed in unforgiving terrains. India has 216 identifiable species of snakes, of which 52 are known to be poisonous. Approximately 2,000,000 snake bites are reported in the country each year with 45,900 national snakebite deaths comprising 5% of all injury deaths and 0.5% of all deaths in India.
Military Hospital, Jammu receives a significant number of snake bite cases annually. This hospital also gets patients from Samba, Akhnoor, Rajouri and adjoining districts. The hospital has devised a Region Specific ASV Administration Protocol (Accelerated Regimen) and compared it with the WHO Regimen of ASV administration with good results.
The list of speakers included eminent doctors and professionals who are stalwarts in their fields and have contributed significantly to the problem of snake bite in India. It also included budding and young speakers fulfilling the vision of encouraging the new talents and giving opportunity to them. The main speaker for the event was Dr HS Bawaskar from Maharashtra who has extensively worked for snake bite cases and is a pioneer in this field in our country.
The CME was attended by more than 100 delegates from all over the Northern Command. A Workshop cum Demonstration and Exhibition was also organized for the participating delegates on Prevention, Identification and Management of such cases. The delegates also got the opportunity for hands on experience and practice of emergency management.
