| Pongong Tso figures among 10 Special Iconic Places, project envisioned by PM | | 
Leh(Ladakh), June 13, (Scoop News)-The Central Government has included picturesque Pangong Lake in the region among 10 other places across India added to Swachh Iconic Places (SIP) under phase III of its flagship programme, Swachh Bharat Mission,
The new sites have been incorporated with 20 other iconic places selected under Phase I and II where special sanitation work is underway at present. A consultation is in process for finalizing the Public Sector Undertakings and Corporations for extending support to the new sites as CSR partners, an official statement said.
Pongong Lake, situated at 14,000 feet (4, 267 M) is a long narrow basin of inland drainage, six and seven kilometer at its widest point and over 130 Kilometre, it is divided by the Line of Actual Control (LoAC) between India and China.
The lake affords spectacular views of the mountains of the Changchenmo range to the north, their reflections, shimmering in the ever changing blues and greens of the lake’s brackish water. Above Spangmik are the glaciers and snow capped peaks of the Pongong range.
Spangmik and a scattering of other tiny villages along the lake’s southern shore are the summer homes of scanty population of Changpa, the nomadic herds people of Tibet and southeast Ladakh. The Pongong Chang pa cultivate sparse crop of barely and peas in summer. It is in winter that they unfold their tents (rebo) and their flocks of sheep and pashmina goats out to distant pastures.
The Prime Minister who has envisioned SIP project is being coordinated by the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation with the state government and local administration.
