AIKS expresses concern over denial of voting rights to KPs in civic polls

Jammu, August 09 (Scoop News)-In an extra-ordinary meeting, held to discuss the issues of displaced Kashmiris, the General Secretary Sh. M.K. Pajan reported about the denial of Voting Rights of the community. The meeting was presided over by the President of All India Kashmiri Samaj (AIKS), Col Tej Tikoo, Ph.D. (Retd). The members of AIKS expressed concern and flayed the state Government for denying the community their democratic right.
It was reported that Jammu & Kashmir State is holding elections to the urban local Bodies and Panchayats. In last urban body election held in 2005, displaced Kashmiris were enrolled in municipal election from the wards they are settled in and have constructed houses. But this time they are being denied this fundamental right to vote as their names do not figure in the Municipal Voter Lists.
Col Tej Tikoo, President AIKS, also expressed anguish at restricting the community from voting in the various democratic set-ups by making monstrous and irrational rules for voting. He further said that the community is being forced to take legal route for getting their basic rights.
AIKS appeals to the Election Authority of J&K and Election Commission of India to direct the authorities concerned to include KP voters immediately. AIKS also request Hon'ble Governor of J&K to direct the authorities to take necessary steps for enrolment of KP displaced community living in different wards in Jammu city and in Panchayat, failing which they stand to lose their voting right. AIKS supports this demand raised by displaced cell of BJP and other social organizations of KP community in exile.
