Kashmir based political leaders disapprove of Governor’s remarks on city mayor
refer to rule book and set criterion

Srinagar, October 10, (Scoop News)-Several Kashmir based leaders belonging to different political hues have expressed their disapproval over the Governor, Sat Pal Malik’s recent comment plumping for a particular person for the post of mayor of Srinagar.

“This is horrific and surprising and raises several questions about the objectivity and neutrality of the constitutional office,” they alleged.

Referring to his recent interview to a private news channel, the leaders alleged that skepticism about the fairness of ongoing electoral process for urban local bodies (ULB) in the state was already pitched and the governor’s statement has confirmed their apprehensions.

Malik in his recent conversation with the channel had indicated that a foreign educated individual was going to become the mayor of the capital city, Srinagar. “Obviously, he (Governor) was referring to an individual who recently resigned from a party to contest the elections after it (party) announced to boycott the ULB and Panchayat elections,” they alleged.

“His revelation casts doubt on the credibility and impartiality of entire electoral process,” they said, adding “how could one speculate about a particular individual to be the mayor of the city in advance?”

They said the rule book emphasizes that only elected councilors are entitled to elect the mayor after adhering to prescribed norms as practiced on previous occasions.

Earlier too, his remarks on Articles 35A and 370 had raised several eyebrows within political circles in Jammu and elsewhere when he said that he wanted the hearing on Article 35A deferred till an elected government was in place in the state. He termed the remarks made by Tushar Mehta, who represented the case in the apex court, as unfortunate and does not endorse them.

However, with reference to elections, he asserted that Articles 35A and 370 have nothing to do with the polls.
