Congress toasts decision of governor’s administration for according ‘divisional’ status to Ladakh
NC and PDP take offence at ignoring Chenab and Pir Panjal regions

Leh(Ladakh), February 9, (Scoop News)-Several Congress leaders have hailed the decision of the governor’s administration for according ‘divisional status’ to strategically located remote mountainous region of Ladakh.

Expressing satisfaction, Congress leaders recalled the visit of the Congress Policy Planning Group to the region last year as part of the party’s reach out programme policy and met cross section of the people for the resolution of their grievances.

The people of the region particularly the youth had sought Congress party’s support for their long pending demand of Union Territory (UT) or at least extend its support to creation of a separate administrative division to which CPPG had assured its support, the leaders added,

They said the Congress had always advocated equitable development of all three region of the state and it would remain steadfast to empower them equally.

Since the region remains cut off from rest of the state for over six months during winter months due to heavy snowfall on Zojila pass, the creation of a separate administrative division would go a long way in restoring confidence among the people in twin border districts of Leh and Kargil, the leaders pointed out.

Meanwhile, Kashmir centric political parties, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and National Conference (NC), have stirred up bitter reactions from them for ignoring Chenab valley and Pir Panjal region.

NC leader, Omar Abdullah said if given the mandate to rule, his party would grant similar status to both these regions of Jammu province. If people vote us to power by reposing their faith in the NC, our government will grant a divisional status to the Pir Panjal region and the Chenab valley as already laid out in our regional autonomy promise, asserted Omar and said we won’t adopt a selective approach but will instead take a holistic view and address the wider problems, Our regional autonomy document will be our template.

“After the elections of 2019 should the people of J&K repose faith in @JKNC our government will grant division status to Chenab valley and Pir Panjal regions as already laid in our regional autonomy promise,” Omar tweeted. “We will take care of regional and sub regional aspirations .We won’t adopt pick and choose approach of the Governor but will instead take a holistic view and address the wider problems. Our regional autonomy document will be our template (sic).”

Even his (Omar’s) political bête noire, Mehbooba Mufti, supported a divisional status for Chenab valley and Pir Panjal region. She accused the Governor of furthering the BJP’s agenda by skipping the divisional status to twin regions of Chenab valley and Pir Panjal region.

The process of decentralization of administrative control by the creation of a new division is good and welcome though Ladakh already has hill development council. However, we are forced to question the intent behind this, she said adding that we had sought to create new divisions earlier also when we were in coalition with the BJP but the party opposed it then. Now, it seems the Governor is peddling the BJP’s agenda by ignoring the deserving Pir Pnajal and Chenab valley.

“…Seems like Guv sb is peddling BJP agenda by ignoring other equally deserving regions,” Mehbooba said. “I don’t understand the intent behind the move. If their intentions were honest then they should have also announced separate divisions for Pir Pnajal and Chenab valley. Such decisions are not taking frequently (sic).”
