CDPO Reasi organises POSHAN Abhiyaan Awareness

Jammu, March 09 (Scoop News)- In order to broaden awareness at grass root level various public outreach initiatives for POSHAN Abhiyaan in ICDS Project are being taken by CDPO Reasi Ms Anjum Ganai. To eradicate Malnutrition a broad based strategy needs to be adopted of which one is generating awareness among the masses by mobilizing pubic support and by organizing Community Based events and the other are holistic interventions.

To spread the message of Poshan Abhiyaan and to ensure that the message of Nutrition, Sanitation and hygiene reaches every household in ICDS Project Reasi, today a meeting was organised by ICDS and RDD with the Field functionaries of ICDS, RDD and Panchayat Representatives, to ensure that the practices to be adopted under Poshan Abhiyaan reaches every house hold.
A meeting in this behalf was held at Panasa Block in Reasi and at Kotli Bajalian block in Katra Block which was attended by BDO Reasi Sh Sanjeev Sharma, BDO Katra Ms Saba and CDPO Reasi MS Anjum Ganai. The meeting was presided over by Sh Rajinder Kumar Addl Deputy Commissioner Reasi (District Programme officer ICDS Reasi).
While speaking on the occasion Ms Anjum Ganai CDPO Reasi said that nearly half of infants are still being deprived of exclusive breastfeeding in our State, despite decades of doctor’s recommendations and numerous benefits of breastfeeding. She sought help from the Panchayat representatives to actively participate in this cause so that the issues of Malnutrition get addressed.
She highlighted that Breastfeeding being an important child survival intervention if given within an hour of birth can prevent 20% of newborn deaths. Infants who are not breastfed are 15 times more likely to die from pneumonia and 11 times more likely to die from diarrhea than children who are exclusively breastfed, which are two leading causes of death in children under-five years of age, said Ms Ganai.

Given the overwhelming evidence available on the impact of breastfeeding on reduction of neonatal mortality and infant mortality, she said that it is imperative that efforts are intensified to: (1) improve optimal breastfeeding practices (early initiation of breastfeeding within one hour, (2) exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, and (3) continued breastfeeding for at-least two years.

Promotion, protection and support of breastfeeding is an important activity of the health systems and the we need to intensify efforts to promote optimal infant and young child feeding practices.

Ms Ganai said that to eradicate the Malnutrition from our state especially from Reasi, we need to bring in Behavioral Changes among the people in their daily routine like Hygiene and Sanitation. This can only be achieved by mobilization of Public at ground level and Panchayat Representatives can thus act as agents of change for spreading healthy eating and following good hygiene and sanitation practices.

She appealed the people to come forward and join the mission undertaken by this office under Poshan Abhiyaan for eradication of Malnutrition from this area by reaching every house hold of Reasi, as without the active public support it is very difficult to make inroads among public living in the remote areas.
