Massive protests held across Valley on 4th successive day against rape of a minor
dozens including security personnel injured in clashes, incident evokes huge condemnation

Srinagar, May 13, (Scoop News)_Massive protests were witnessed across Kashmir Valley for past four days following an alleged rape incident of a three year old girl child in Bandipora district on May 8.

The protestors, who were demanding death penalty for a man accused of raping a minor, disrupted the vehicular traffic by blocking several major roads. They also clashed with police at many places in which dozens of security personnel sustained injuries.

Witnesses said that people from various localities took out protest marches demanding stringent punishment against the accused, Tahir Ahmed Mir, a school dropout.

They said on Wednesday last, a three year old girl child was raped allegedly by her neighbor after luring her to a nearby school. The child was rescued by some women after hearing victim’s cries emanating from the school’s washroom.

Soon after the incident took place a police team rushed to the spot and with the help of locals the accused was arrested and lodged in police station at Sumbal. He was booked under FIR No 81 of 2019 under sections 363, 342 and 376 of RPC.

According to official sources, seeking not be named, the Station House Officer (SHO) police station Sumbal and a senior prosecuting would be investing the matter. They said the police is already treating the accused as a ‘major’ and the certificate circulated on the social media regarding the age of accused was ‘fictitious’.

The sources said the age of the accused will be determined through medical examination by the board of doctors.

Meanwhile, police has taken into custody for questioning, Ali Mohammad Thokur, principal of Islamic Educational Institute (IEI), Trigam, Sumbal, who had reportedly issued a ‘fake date of birth certificate.’

The incident evoked massive condemnation from entire society who sought severe punishment for the accused. Separatist leader, Syed Ali Shah Geelani termed the incident as a ‘black stain of social fabric of Kashmir’. He made a fervent appeal to the people for unity, patience, discipline and brotherhood and asked them that they should pay keen attention to strengthening local committees to enlighten the young generation with basic education of Quran and Sunnah.

While expressing shock on the reports of rape of a minor girl, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief, Mehbooba Mufti, tweeted “Mortified to hear about the rape of a three year old girl, what a sick pervert would do this? Society often blames women for inviting unwanted attention but what was this child’s fault? Times like these. Shariah law seems apt so that such paedophiles are stoned to death.”

Sajjad Lone, who has taken up the matter with the Governor Satya Pal Malik, in his series of tweets on the incident, has written “The tragedy is as beastly, it merits self introspection. We need to seriously ponder on this mad sickness on the prowl. We need to work hard to rediscover the moral foundations of our society.”

“Talked to honourable Governor and requested that the perpetrator of the ghastly crime against a three year child b strongly dealt with. And also requested that protestors not b dealt with force. These protests are natural and instinctive outpouring against a heinous crime,” he wrote in another tweet.

National Conference (NC) leader, Omar Abdullah, urged the police to investigate the matter on a fast track. He tweeted, “The rape of a child….is a travesty@ JmuKmr Police must ensure a speedy investigation with only one consideration and that is to identify the guilty, prepare water tight case to ensure exemplary punishment for those responsible.”
