Ayushman Bharat - Long live India
The rain is pattering on the muddy meadows outside. Through the paneless windows, a chilly blast of air runs through the room now and then and makes Murli move even a little closer to the bonfire. In the adjacent room, his wife Preeto wraps their small children, Saloni and Harsh, in the only blanket that covers the mattress on the ground. It is a draughty, sparse place, but at least they can stay here for free. It belongs to Murli ́s brother- in-law, on whose farm Murli works as a daily labourer. The little he earns is hardly enough for three meals a day. Living hand to mouth, there is no leverage for any extra expenses. That is why, when the painful swelling in his groin started, Murli just ignored it. The increasing pain became a daily routine, another inconvenience in his tough life he grimly puts up with.
Reluctantly, Murli went to a hospital where he was diagnosed with a groin hernia that required surgery. Waiting for his turn, Murli started chatting with the patient on the bed next to him- this encounter changed everything. The man told him about a new healthcare scheme of the government PM-JAY. The scheme covered hospitalisation costs for eligible patients. Murli too, was soon identified as a beneficiary. He almost could not believe it was true: Not only would he be finally relieved from his suffering, he did not even have to pay a single rupee.
The success stories of PM-JAY traverse the length and breadth of the country.
Taking another milestone decision, the Central government has decided to provide free testing and treatment of Corona virus under the Ayushman Bharat Yojana.
It was government’s foresightedness that it initiated Ayushman Bharat scheme long before the outbreak of Covid 19 pandemic. The main aim of this scheme was to provide better health services to the poor citizens of the country besides improvement in health and wellness of the people under the principle of naturopathy and homeopathy guidelines, which have now been extended towards a unified fight against Covid 19.
We all know that prevention is better than cure. As long as the vaccine for COVID-19 eludes mankind, it would be wise to take preventive measures which boost our immunity.
With this target in sight, Ministry of AYUSH has recommended many self-care guidelines for preventive health measures and boosting immunity with special reference to respiratory health during COVID 19 crisis. These are supported by Ayurvedic literature and scientific publications. Enhancing the body’s natural defence system (immunity) plays an important role in maintaining optimum health.
Ministry of AYUSH has advised to drink warm water throughout the day and practice Yogasana, Pranayama and meditation for at least 30 minutes daily besides use spices like turmeric, cumin, coriander and garlic in cooking. It also help to improve respiratory health system which ultimately facilitate in containing corona virus.
It has also recommended to drink herbal tea or Kadha made from Basil, Cinnamon, Black pepper, Dry Ginger and Raisin once or twice a day. It said that milk with turmeric powder also help in boosting immunity.
In addition to this, AYUSH Ministry has also suggested some other measures to boost immunity like Oil pulling therapy, Nasal application, Steam inhalation with fresh Mint leaves/Caraway seeds and Clove powder mixed with natural sugar/honey can be taken 2-3 times a day.
Ayushman Bharat scheme has become more relevant in this time of corona virus pandemic. Even after the pandemic has been bought under the control and mitigation, Indian population will be benefitted by the continuation of the scheme as it will increase the health and wellness of the people in long run.
